Deontay Wilder (@BronzeBomber) was set to fight Poland’s Andrzej Wawrzyk at Premier Boxing Champions February 25, 2017 event at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama. A failed drug test changed all of that and Gerald Washington (@gwgallonnegro) has stepped in to replace Wawrzyk.
The failed drug test was conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association on January 15 and 16. Two urine screens showed Wawrzyk test positive for the anabolic steroid stanozolol.
Washington, a former tight end at USC is currently undefeated with a record of 18-0-1. His last bout was a fourth round knockout of Ray Austin. Despite the bout being confirmed today, it was anticipated that Washington was the front runner when it was announced that Wawrzyk had been removed from the fight.
Wilder is the current WBC heavyweight champion and is undefeated with a record of 37-0. He last fought in mid July of 2016 when he defended his WBC title by defeating Chris Arreola (@nightmareboxing) by (T)KO in the eight round. Wilder will be looking to make the fifth consecutive defense of his heavyweight title, and like in most of his title defenses he will have the home field advantage fighting in his home state of Alabama.
