Carl Frampton (@RealCFrampton) and Leo Santa Cruz (@leosantacruz2) went twelve rounds tonight at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
This was a re-match of their July 2016 bout, which saw Frampton take home a razor thin majority decision and the WBA super featherweight title. This time around the script was flipped and it was Santa Cruz who took home the majority decision and the WBA super featherweight belt.
Santa Cruz had an excellent game plan, he stayed back and let Frampton come to him. A sharp jab kept Frampton from getting inside and scoring. Santa Cruz slowed things down compared to his normal fighting style and it paid off. His reach was a major factor and he used it well.
The loss is the first of Frampton’s career, and it likely set up a rubber match between the two. This has all the makings of a great trilogy. Frampton handed Santa Cruz the first loss of his professional career, and now the favor was returned. The third fight between these two should be just as close as the first two bouts, and it will be interesting to see who can make the necessary adjustments.
