UFC on Fox 23 took place tonight at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. Number one ranked Valentina Shevchenko (@BulletValentina) and number two ranked Julianna Pena (@VenezuelanVixen) were the main attraction with a title shot for the women’s UFC bantamweight title on the line.

Shevchenko is considerd by many to be a great striker because of her background in K-1 and Muay Thai, but tonight she showed that she is an all around fighter. Most of the first round was spent against the fence as both fighters looked to gain the upper hand. Shevchenko was able to take Pena down twice with some perfectly executed sweeps. As the first round came to a close Shevchenko was working from the top position, but Pena was able to grab a hold of an arm. Shevchenko was able to defend the armbar until time ran out in the opening frame.

In the second round the fight once again turned to grappling for position along the fence until Pena was able to get Shevchenko down, but not much damage was inflicted by Pena from the top position. Shevchenko was working from full guard and eventually made Pena pay, she sunk in an armbar and forced the tap. With the win Shevhenko secured a fight for the women’s bantamweight title against current champion Amanda Nunes (@Amanda_Leoa). The official end came at 4:29 of the second round.

UFC on Fox 23 ResultsIn the co-main event hometown favorite Donald Cerrone faced Jorge Masvidal (@GamebredFighter). Despite having the crowd on his side, Cerrone could not stop Masvidal from coming out on top. As a close first round was winding down Masvidal countered a Cerrone kick with a beautiful three punch combination that sent him down. Masvidal jumped all over him looking for the finish, but referee Herb Dean stepped in to halt the action because the round had ended. Cerrone was clearly hurt as he returned to his corner.

Masivdal picked up right where he left off in the second round. Cerrone didn’t seem to be fully recovered and Masvidal made him pay. A right hand sent Cerrone down again and as he got back to his feet against the fence, Masvidal unleashed a flurry of body blows that forced the stoppage. Masvidal has now put together three consecutive wins against quality opponents and is beginning to look like a real threat in the welterweight division.
