HBO Boxing After Dark featured an exciting fight card last night that was headlined by Francisco Vargas (@elbandido130) vs. Miguel Berchelt (@AlacranBerchelt). The action took place at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California.

Vargas had yet to taste defeat entering the fight, but that didn’t matter to Berchelt. From the start this fight was controlled by him as he battered a very tough Vargas to the body and head. It seemed Vargas was not going to be put down despite the beating he was taking. The offense he did put up didn’t seem to bother Berchelt, and by the 11th round Vargas face was a swollen and bloody mess. The referee stopped the bout at 2:19 of the round and saved Vargas from any further punishment. The win earned Berchelt the WBC super featherweight championship.

In the night’s co-main event Japan’s Takashi Miura took on Mexico’s Miguel Roman. It was a close fight until midway through the seventh round when Miura began to take over. In the 10th he scored a knockdown with a left to the body. Early in the 11th round it seemed things were over for Roman when he was knocked down by a three punch combination, but he somehow managed to get back to his feet. The third time was the charm for Miura, he floored Roman in the 12th round with a short left hand and he could not recover. Miura has now won nine of his last ten, while Roman had an 18 fight win streak snapped.

The win for Miura likely sets up a fight with Berchelt. Miura was the former WBC super featherweight champion until he was knocked out by Franciso Vargas in late 2015. He was up on the judges score cards in the fight with Vargas before being knocked out.
